At that time the term dude was in full reruns after being plucked from its proper place (Spicollis lips in Fast Times at Rigemount High) & was falling out of everyones mouth. From burnouts to those who pretended to be a burnout to jocks and beyond Hey dude! was so very popular. Later they even made a movie out of the term, thats just how cool it was. At the time, if someone prefaced asking me for a hoagie or burger or whatever and prefaced it with the term Hey dude
Id completely ignore them. Id go on about my business until one of the staff would tell them Oh, did you call him dude? Yeah, he wont respond if you call him dude. call him Billy. It was that kind of place and I was that kind of guy. There was a thrash metal band in the late 80s called Scatterbrain who had a song titled Dont call me Dude which Id hum while I worked. Ive wanted this shirt for ages.
